I am a sneakerhead episode 42 - @The_shoe_story
Hello sneaker lovers. My name is Jolin aka @the_shoe_story (Instagram), I’m a 29 year old sneaker lover from India (yes India, I know it sounds a bit strange), born and raised in India before I moved to New Zealand 4 years ago. It was here in New Zealand where my passion for sneakers went from 0 to 100 and I started collecting them. I currently live in Auckland, New Zealand
I have always been fond of sneakers with bright colours and designs that pop up, however owning a pair of so called branded sneaker was not a reality until I graduated out of High school. My mum gifted me a pair of Reebok classics, till then it was just any kicks from the local market that had good colour schemes. Over the course of time as I started working I had enough money to buy sneakers on a regular basis and sometimes I would even get my cousins to send me sneakers from the Middle East, and this was in late 90s early 2000s. Back then however when I bought a pair of sneakers I'd used to retire the older pair and wear the new ones till they are beat.
It was only after my move to New Zealand that I had multiple pairs in my rotation. Also giving up smoking helped a lot financially as I was able to use that money to support my sneaker collection, what I call, my more 'healthier addiction'.
I mainly had Jordans in my collection when I first started collecting but after 3 years of collection and around 100 sneakers deep I realized that Jordans are not my jam and runners are what I like the most. Over the last few months however I have managed to sell most of my Jordans during swap meets and on online sneaker forums. I still have a few Jordans left in my collection though, just because of some memories attached to it, however most of my collection these days consist of Asics. A few NBs, Adidas, Reeboks and good old swoosh have also managed to make the cut and stay with me.
Sometimes you do feel a bit odd sitting on the streets on cold winter nights when your 'non sneaker loving' friends are out clubbing, but the minute I get my hands on that new pair of shoes everything else is forgotten lol. Sneakers for me, is a by product of time well spent with friends, friends who I have met during lineups and raffles. Apart from getting to know different people and making friends the thing that I enjoy most about sneakers is that fresh smell of leather when you open the box. I love the materials used mostly on the colabs.
Most of the sneakers that I buy are the ones that I like. My top 3 sneakers that I have in my collection are:
1. Asics Gel Lyte III Made In Japan (Love the materials and signed by the man himself, Shigeyuki Mitsui)
2. Asics Gel Lyte V x Ronnie Fieg 'Volcano' (Love the colorway and the shape of those joints)
3. Adidas Ultraboost OG (One of the most comfortable sneaker)
Shout to Epsilon magazine and Oliver for letting me share my short story.. Special thanks to all those who have helped me in getting a pair ..
