I am a sneakerhead episode 110 - @Ohhbillyboy

I go by @ohhbillyboy. I was born, raised, and live in Sydney, Australia. I am of Korean heritage.

I only had the financial means to start collecting sneakers in the last few years after settling into my professional career.

However, for me I think growing into this hobby was an organic progression, given that I was raised on the influence of 90’s basketball, golden era hip-hop culture and their associated aesthetics. Subconsciously, I have no doubt the appeal was always there – I watched replays over and over of Jordan rising up and floating effortlessly from the free-throw line, but only realised at a later point that those were White Cement 3’s he was rocking as he graced the air.

After some time of consuming kicks at an alarming rate, I grew more selective, and started focusing not just on the overall look, but the design, construction, vision and execution of each model and I guess that’s how I got so hooked on the New Balance Made in USA 99X series, and the runners scene in general.

I think my passion for photography really validated sneaker collecting as a hobby for me. I enjoy giving my own take on a silhouette, where I can creatively express or highlight particular details that I like the most about a certain sneaker.

At the heart of it, I enjoy story-telling and visions that are expressed in innovative and beautiful ways. And I think that’s what I love the most about sneakers – at the outset, there is a creative vision saying ‘This is what I want the sneaker to represent’, and if it is executed in a tasteful and exciting way, you can end up with amazing pieces such as the New Balance 997 ‘Luxury Goods’ – amazing quality suede and leather, wrapped in elegant Hermès orange across the entire upper. In respect of them, a friend of mine once said “Man them sh*ts beautiful – it’s like wearing designer handbags on your feet”. And that's how you can tell the vision was executed flawlessly.

As any enthusiast would find, it is very difficult to pick out favourites from my collection! That being said, the following pairs tend to show up regularly in my recent rotations:

Concepts x New Balance 997 Rose

Saint Laurent SL10H Royals

Y-3 Pure Boost ZG Knit (Black / White)

J. Crew x Asics Gel Lyte III Ribbon Blue

Highsnobiety x Adidas Ultra Boost

Nike Air More Uptempo (Black / White)

Lately my sneaker photography has shared space with street and architecture photography that I feel passionate about. So if that is your kind of thing, feel free to swing by my profile.
